France Apologises After Human Rights Criticism Sparks U.S. Walkout

France and the United States disagreed about one vote at the United Nations.

France had posted a message criticizing the United States for that vote.

The message said the U.S. had voted with countries including Russia and North Korea against extending Volker Turk’s term as U.N. human-rights chief.

The United States was angered and walked out of a Security Council meeting while France was speaking.

The disagreement also delayed the arrival of France’s proposed new ambassador to Washington.

France later said it regretted the message.

France explained that the disagreement was about one vote, not about whether human rights should be defended.

The apology could help the ambassador receive U.S. approval.
