India to Impose Steel Import Duties for Three Years
The government is putting extra taxes (safeguard duties) on certain steel products coming into India.
This is because some local steel companies said that there was too much steel being imported suddenly, which hurt their business.
The taxes will start at 12% and go down over three years.
The companies wanted these taxes to protect them from foreign competition, while some groups are against it, saying it will make things more expensive for businesses that use steel.
Commerce Ministry recommends safeguard duties on specific steel imports for three years.
Duties: 12% in the first year, decreasing to 11% by the third year.
The Indian Steel Association (ISA) sought the duties, citing increased imports.
GTRI opposed the duties, warning of increased costs and harm to key sectors.
Duties apply to hot and cold-rolled products, metallic and color-coated steel.
