Kuwait Infant Hears After Bilateral Cochlear Implant Surgery

Kuwait Infant Hears After Bilateral Cochlear Implant Surgery

A 15-month-old girl from Kuwait was born unable to hear.

Doctors in West Bengal placed special devices in both of her ears.

The operation happened on August 4 at Apollo Hospitals.

On August 25, doctors switched on the outside parts of the devices.

The girl began crying when she heard sound for the first time.

A cochlear implant does more than make sounds louder.

It sends signals past damaged hearing cells directly to the nerve that carries sound to the brain.

Doctors said finding hearing loss early can help children develop speech with therapy.

The surgery cost about Rs 50 lakh.
