Indian Railways Updates Tatkal Booking Rules
Indian Railways has changed how people book last‑minute train tickets called Tatkal.
Now, when you go to a ticket counter, you get a numbered token that tells you when you can book.
The tokens for AC trains come between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m., and for non‑AC trains between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m.
There are two groups at the counter: Group A gets served first, and Group B, which includes everyone else, must show an Aadhaar card or another photo ID.
Even if you book online, you still need to prove your Aadhaar and get a one‑time password on your phone.
The new online site is faster, so more people are able to book tickets in the first few minutes after the window opens.
Token system at counters replaces separate token collection, reducing crowding.
Tokens for AC trains issued 8:30‑9:30 am; non‑AC tokens 9:00‑9:30 am.
Counter bookings split into Category A (priority) and Category B (requires Aadhaar or photo ID).
Online Tatkal bookings still need Aadhaar authentication and OTP verification.
Revamped IRCTC beta site increased early bookings by 5% within the first 3 minutes.
