Indian Scientists Develop Smart Drug Targeting Aggressive Breast Cancer

Scientists in India have created a possible new cancer medicine called RK-251.

It is designed to stay mostly inactive until it enters an environment found more often in cancer cells.

Cancer cells can contain higher levels of reactive oxygen species, or ROS.

ROS act like a switch that activates RK-251.

The activated drug releases NBDHEX, which blocks GSTP1, a protein that can help cancer cells survive.

RK-251 also produces a near-infrared light signal when it activates.

This signal helps researchers see whether the drug has switched on.

Early laboratory tests showed activity against aggressive triple-negative breast cancer cells and less activity against non-malignant cells.

The drug has only been tested before human trials, so it is too early to say that it can replace chemotherapy.
