Bengal MLA Sets Up Help Desk Amidst Voter Roll Revision Anxiety
In West Bengal, a local politician named Dr. Sankar Ghosh has opened a special office to help people understand the process of updating the voter list.
This update is called the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
Some people are worried that this update might be like a test to see if they are truly Indian citizens, similar to something called the NRC.
Dr. Ghosh says that this update is just to make sure the voter list is correct and includes only real Indian citizens.
He also says his office will help people know what papers they need and how to talk to the election workers.
However, some people are still scared because of past worries about the NRC, especially after a man reportedly died by suicide and left a note blaming the NRC.
The TMC political party is blaming the BJP for causing this fear.
Siliguri MLA Dr. Sankar Ghosh has established a Help Desk to assist residents with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The Help Desk aims to alleviate anxiety and confusion among citizens regarding the voter roll update process.
Dr. Ghosh stated the SIR is a 'people-friendly exercise' to create a flawless electoral roll of genuine Indian citizens.
Despite assurances, some sections of the population in North Bengal remain apprehensive, linking the SIR to the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The TMC has accused the BJP of spreading fear regarding citizenship issues, citing the alleged suicide of a man who blamed the NRC.
