Decoy Plane Tactic: Trump, Clinton Used Secret Aircraft
Presidents sometimes need to travel in secret so bad people cannot hurt them.
In July, President Donald Trump went to Turkey and helpers worried that people from Iran might try to attack his plane.
So they kept it a secret which plane he was really on.
Cameras showed him getting on the famous plane called Air Force One, but he later slipped out in a big catering truck and moved to a smaller hidden military plane.
This trick is not new.
Back in 2000, President Bill Clinton did almost the same thing when he traveled from India to Pakistan.
Everyone thought he was on Air Force One, but he was secretly on a plain, unmarked airplane.
The secret was only revealed when he stepped out of that plane in Pakistan.
One reporter was told about Clinton's secret switch, but the reporters with Trump did not know he had left.
Presidents do this to stay safe, and President Trump said he simply follows what the Secret Service and the military tell him to do.
President Donald Trump secretly flew out of Turkey in July aboard a US Air Force C-32A aircraft while the White House indicated he was travelling on Air Force One, to pre-empt threats from Iran.
Fomer President Bill Clinton used a similar decoy tactic in March 2000, flying from Mumbai to Islamabad on an unmarked white Gulfstream jet while a US-marked aircraft acted as a decoy.
Trump boarded the older Air Force One in front of cameras in Ankara, then was secretly moved off via an airport catering truck raised to the aircraft door and transferred to the smaller C-32A.
Clinton's switch was known in advance by at least one journalist, Susan Page of USA Today, who was briefed by Joe Lockhart and other White House officials; Trump's travelling press reportedly did not know about the swap.
Trump confirmed the aircraft switch, saying he follows the Secret Service and military, and speculated the plane he actually flew on may have been at greater risk than the decoy.
- Who
- US President Donald Trump, former US President Bill Clinton, White House officials including Joe Lockhart, and USA Today journalist Susan Page.
- What
- Both presidents secretly used decoy aircraft on foreign trips: Trump flew out of Turkey on a US Air Force C-32A after appearing to board Air Force One, and Clinton in 2000 flew from Mumbai to Islamabad on an unmarked Gulfstream jet.
- When
- Trump's secret departure occurred in July 2026 following the NATO summit in Ankara on July 8; Clinton's decoy flight took place on March 25, 2000.
- Where
- Ankara, Turkey and RAF Mildenhall, UK for Trump; Mumbai, India and Islamabad, Pakistan for Clinton.
- Why
- To keep the presidents safe from security threats, including a reported credible Iranian threat in Trump's case and concerns about anti-Western terrorism and violence in Pakistan during Clinton's visit.

Decoy aircraft as security measure
Security First
Decoy planes and secret transfers are prudent safeguards for a president facing credible threats, such as the reported Iranian threat in Trump's case or anti-Western terrorism risks in Pakistan for Clinton.
Transparency First
Publicly indicating the president is on Air Force One while secretly moving him is deceptive to the press and the public, even when justified by security concerns.
New Boeing 747-8's defensive readiness
Security First
Because the Qatar-gifted 747-8 lacks the older Air Force One's full defensive systems, moving the president to a different aircraft was a necessary precaution.
Transparency First
Trump himself suggested the aircraft he actually flew on may have been at greater risk since attackers would target the plane believed to be carrying the president.
Informing the press about the switch
Security First
Briefing trusted journalists in advance, as done with Susan Page in 2000, balanced press safety with public knowledge.
Transparency First
Leaving the travelling press and some White House staff unaware that Trump had switched planes is a sharp contrast that raises transparency concerns.
