Assam to Ban Polygamy, Introduce Jail Time and Expand Girls' Education Scheme
The leaders in Assam, India, are planning to make a new law to stop people from having more than one spouse at the same time.
If this law passes, anyone caught doing this could go to jail for at least seven years.
This new rule will be discussed in the state's assembly in late November.
At the same time, the government is also giving more money to help girls go to school.
Girls in 11th grade will get money each month, and older students in college will also receive financial help.
The government says this program is already helping more girls stay in school and fewer are dropping out.
These actions show the government is working on making new rules and also helping young students with their education.
Assam government will introduce a bill to ban polygamy on November 25.
Practicing polygamy could lead to a minimum of seven years in jail.
The Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Moina scheme supporting girls' education will be expanded.
