India’s ‘No Insurance, No Fuel’ Plan Signals New Digital Push

India’s ‘No Insurance, No Fuel’ Plan Signals New Digital Push

The Supreme Court wants authorities to test a new way to check vehicle insurance.

In the proposed pilot, a petrol pump could check whether a vehicle has valid insurance before selling fuel.

Cameras and government databases could help perform the check automatically.

Vehicles without insurance might receive an electronic fine or be stopped from refuelling.

This matters because many vehicles in India do not have insurance.

People hurt in crashes can face delays getting compensation when the vehicle involved is uninsured.

The plan also suggests longer insurance periods for newly purchased cars and two-wheelers.

The idea is still only a pilot, so officials must work out how it will affect different drivers, including gig workers.
