CDC committee changes hepatitis B vaccine policy

CDC committee changes hepatitis B vaccine policy

The CDC's advisory committee has changed the rules about when babies should get the hepatitis B vaccine.

Before, all babies were supposed to get it within a day of being born.

Now, only babies whose moms have hepatitis B will get it right away.

For other babies, parents can decide with their doctor when to start the vaccine series, but not before 2 months old.

Some people on the committee think this is a good idea because they want parents to be more involved.

But others disagree because the vaccine has been very effective at preventing hepatitis B in babies.

The World Health Organization still recommends giving the vaccine right after birth.

The final decision is up to the acting CDC director.
