KMC Proposes Redrawing Calcutta's Wards

KMC Proposes Redrawing Calcutta's Wards

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has proposed a plan to redraw the boundaries of the city's wards.

Currently, there are 144 wards, but the proposal aims to increase this number to 200.

The first 100 wards, which have been part of the KMC since around Independence, will be reorganized into 130 wards.

The remaining 44 wards, which were added later, will be reconstituted into 70 wards.

The redrawn ward boundaries are expected to be made public by July 31.

The goal of this exercise is to ensure that the wards have nearly uniform area, population, and voter strength.

The 16 boroughs of KMC will remain unchanged, but the number of wards in each borough will increase.

The area administered by the KMC stretches from Cossipore in the north to Joka in the south, and from EM Bypass and adjoining areas in the east to Garden Reach and Metiabruz in the west.
