Tax refunds still possible despite missed July 31 ITR deadline

Tax refunds still possible despite missed July 31 ITR deadline

Every year, people in India send a special form to the government about the money they earn.

That form is called an income tax return, or ITR.

Sometimes the government keeps a little extra money from people, and it gives that extra money back — this is called a tax refund.

In 2026, the form was supposed to be sent by July 31.

If someone misses that date, they can still send the form later, before December 31, 2026, and still get their refund.

However, the refund might take longer to arrive, and they may have to pay a small fine.

The fine is bigger for people who earn more money and smaller for people who earn less.

If they owe tax from before, they pay a little extra interest every month until they send the form.

Even if they miss the later deadline too, they can file an updated return within four years.

So it is always best to send the form on time!
