IEX Shares Plunge After CERC Announces Market Coupling Plan
Imagine a marketplace for buying and selling electricity, like the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX).
Right now, IEX sets its own prices.
The government is changing how this works.
Starting in January 2026, a new system will be used.
This means prices will be set in a central place, instead of by IEX alone.
Other companies will also help to set the prices.
Because of this, IEX might not be able to make as much money, which made the price of the company's stocks go down.
The regulator wants to make sure everyone pays the same price for electricity, no matter which exchange they use.
CERC announced a phased implementation of market coupling for the Day-Ahead-Market, starting January 2026.
The Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) shares fell over 30% after the announcement.
Market coupling will bring a centralized pricing mechanism to the power market.
Power exchanges will act as market coupling operators (MCO) on a rotational basis.
The move aims to centralize price discovery, impacting IEX's dominance.
