Indian Residents Lose Millions in Cyber 'Digital Arrest' Scams
Some people in India were tricked out of their money by scammers pretending to be police or government officials.
The scammers would call the victims and threaten to arrest them or say they were involved in crimes.
They convinced the victims to transfer huge amounts of money, promising to return it later.
Unfortunately, it was all a trick.
The police are investigating the cases, including one where the fraudster posed as a crime branch officer who put a man under 'digital arrest.'
A Chembur resident was swindled out of Rs 12.8 crore in a digital arrest scam.
A Delhi-based wholesale garment trader has been arrested in connection with the Chembur case.
A retired professor from Tarnaka was defrauded of Rs 2.12 crore by fraudsters impersonating police and CBI officials.
A Mancherial businessman lost Rs 1.74 crore in a similar scam involving the same impersonators.
Cases are registered with police in Mumbai and Hyderabad, and investigations are underway.
