Crude Shock Sends Nifty to Three-Month Low, Rupee Slips
Indian stocks fell for a second day because investors were worried about rising oil prices and tensions between the United States and Iran.
The Nifty 50, a major stock-market index, dropped to its lowest level in three months.
Bank shares were among the biggest decliners.
Oil prices rose because investors feared that fighting could disrupt supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
Higher oil prices can make it more expensive for India to buy energy from other countries.
The Indian rupee also lost value against the US dollar.
Some smaller-company stocks and healthcare shares gained, but most of the market remained weak.
Investors will next watch oil prices, West Asia events, the BRICS Summit and new stock offerings.
The Nifty 50 fell 144 points, or 0.61 per cent, to 23,635, its lowest level in three months.
Bank Nifty declined 310 points, or 0.54 per cent, extending its losing streak to three sessions.
WTI crude rose above $94 a barrel while Brent traded near $98-$99 amid US-Iran tensions and Strait of Hormuz concerns.
The Indian rupee weakened 33 paise to close at 94.82 against the US dollar, pressured by crude prices and foreign-investor selling.
Markets are watching crude movements, West Asia developments, the BRICS Summit and six mainboard IPOs opening this week.
