Olive Ridley Turtles Begin Mass Mating in Odisha
Every year, thousands of olive ridley turtles come to the coast of Odisha, India, to mate and lay eggs.
This year, the turtles have started their mating season, which will last until the end of January.
After mating, the female turtles will lay their eggs on the beach, and the baby turtles will hatch after about 45 to 60 days.
To protect the turtles, the government has banned fishing in certain areas until May 31, 2026.
This helps keep the turtles safe while they are mating and laying eggs.
Scientists are also tracking some of the turtles using special devices to learn more about their journey.
Mass mating of olive ridley turtles has begun along the Odisha coast, with key sites like Ganjam and Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary seeing increased activity.
The mating season will continue until the end of January, followed by the nesting season until the end of April.
The Odisha government has imposed a seven-month fishing ban in three major river mouths to protect the turtles during breeding season.
Scientists have fitted satellite transmitters on eight turtles to track their migration patterns.
Last year, around 1.5 million turtles were reported during the mass nesting, known as 'arribada'.
