Telangana Group Urges Recognition of Tenant Farmers
Some farmers in Telangana rent land instead of owning it.
A group of citizens says these tenant farmers need official recognition.
Recognition could help them sell their crops to government procurement agencies at the minimum support price.
The group says this is especially important during the current crop season.
It says the El Niño effect has made farming more difficult.
If farmers receive poor prices, they may face greater financial distress.
The group also warned that this could lead to more suicides.
It says Telangana already has a 2011 law that the government should use to recognize these farmers.
A group led by retired Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy urged Telangana to recognize tenant farmers.
The group welcomed the government’s Cabinet sub-committee examining tenant farmers’ problems.
It said immediate recognition could allow tenant farmers to sell crops to procurement agencies at MSP this season.
The group warned that El Niño-related difficulties and poor crop prices could increase distress and suicides.
It said the Land Licensed Cultivators Act, 2011, already provides a legal basis for recognizing cultivators.
