Ayyakannu Urges Tamil Nadu to Sue Karnataka Over Cauvery Water
A farmers’ group says Karnataka has not sent Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu as directed by the Supreme Court.
The group says farmers in the delta region cannot grow two crops called Kuruvai and Samba without the water.
Its leader, P. Ayyakannu, wants Tamil Nadu to ask the Supreme Court for compensation from Karnataka and the Central government.
He says some of that money should go to farmers.
He also wants a dam project at Mekedatu stopped.
He proposed building small check dams along the rivers and linking the Godavari and Cauvery rivers.
The Desiya Thenindhiya Nathigal Inaippu Vivasayigal Sangam criticized Karnataka for not releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
The group said the delay has prevented delta farmers from undertaking Kuruvai and Samba cultivation.
Sangam president P. Ayyakannu urged Tamil Nadu to seek Rs 1 lakh crore in compensation from Karnataka and the Central government.
He proposed distributing Rs 50,000 per acre to farmers in the delta districts.
