India's Parliament Session to Consider Insurance and Insolvency Reforms
The Indian Parliament is having a short meeting in December called the Winter Session.
During this time, they might pass new laws about two important things.
First, they might allow foreign companies to own 100% of insurance companies in India, which could bring more money and choices for people needing insurance.
This might also make insurance grow faster.
Second, they want to make the rules for companies that are in financial trouble (insolvent) work better.
They plan to make it quicker to decide what happens to these companies, let big lenders start the process to fix them, and handle cases where a whole group of companies is in trouble.
They are also trying to make sure government money owed isn't treated like a top priority debt, and they want to stop people from causing delays with silly complaints.
The Opposition thinks the meeting is too short.
India's Winter Session, from December 1-19, may pass economic Bills including insurance reforms and Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) amendments.
The proposed Insurance Bill aims to raise Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) limit from 74% to 100% to attract capital and boost insurance penetration.
Amendments to the IBC will introduce mechanisms for creditor-led, group, and cross-border insolvency to speed up resolutions.
The IBC Bill mandates National Company Law Tribunals (NCLT) to admit insolvency applications within 14 days if default is proven.
Government dues will no longer be considered 'secured' debts, and penalties will be imposed for frivolous applications to curb abuse.
