Chimps Naturally Consume Alcohol, Study Reveals
Scientists have discovered that wild chimpanzees drink alcohol every day.
They get the alcohol from eating fruits that have naturally fermented, like how we make beer or wine.
The chimps drink about as much alcohol as two cocktails.
Scientists found them in Uganda and Ivory Coast.
Although they consume alcohol, they do not show obvious signs of drunkenness.
This finding supports the idea that humans' love for alcohol comes from our primate ancestors.
The scientists think that our ancestors evolved to like the taste of alcohol because it meant they found sweet fruit.
They also collected urine samples from chimps to measure the alcohol percentage.
Wild chimpanzees consume the equivalent of two cocktails worth of alcohol daily.
Chimps ingest ethanol from naturally fermented fruits.
Ethanol concentrations in fruits tested up to 0.61% ABV.
Chimps do not show obvious signs of drunkenness.
The research supports the 'Drunken Monkey' hypothesis.
