Proposed Textile Rules Could Replace Jail With Fines

Proposed Textile Rules Could Replace Jail With Fines

The government has proposed new rules for handling small textile trade violations.

Under the proposal, some minor violations could lead to fines instead of jail.

An adjudicating officer would investigate each case.

The officer would generally have 180 days to finish the inquiry and make a decision.

The clock would start after the person replies to a show-cause notice, or after the reply deadline passes.

The officer could decide that no violation occurred and close the case.

The officer could also give a warning or impose a penalty.

The size of any penalty would depend on how serious and repeated the violation was, as well as any damage and mitigating circumstances.
