Karnataka passes bill to criminalize social boycott
The Karnataka government has passed a new law to stop social boycotts, which is when a group of people, like a caste or community, refuses to interact with or support certain individuals or families.
This can include not letting them work, go to school, or even participate in religious events.
The law says that if someone does this, they can go to jail for up to three years and have to pay a fine.
The law also says that if a group of people meets to decide to boycott someone, that meeting is illegal.
The government has appointed special officers to help enforce this law.
This law is similar to one that was passed in Maharashtra a few years ago.
The idea is to make sure that everyone is treated fairly and with respect, according to the values in the Indian Constitution.
The Karnataka Legislative Assembly passed the Karnataka Social Boycott (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Bill, 2025, on December 18, 2025.
The bill criminalizes social boycott by caste or community bodies, with penalties of up to three years imprisonment and fines of up to Rs 1 lakh.
Social boycott is defined as any form of social discrimination, including denial of work, business opportunities, and participation in social or religious life.
The bill targets collective enforcement, holding individuals who incite or encourage boycotts, as well as members of bodies that vote in favor of imposing a boycott, liable.
The bill appoints Social Boycott Prohibition Officers to detect offenses, report cases, and assist courts during proceedings.
