Rising School Costs Crush Middle-Class Indian Families
Going to school in India is getting really expensive.
A chartered accountant named Meenal Goel shared that it costs about ₹22 lakh to educate a child from Class 1 to Class 12 in a decent private school.
This includes things like tuition, books, uniforms, and transport.
Some families are even taking loans or cutting back on other expenses to afford it.
A survey found that most parents saw their school fees go up by at least 10% this year.
In cities like Delhi and Bengaluru, the increases were even higher.
Many families are struggling to keep up with these costs, and some are choosing not to send their kids to school because it's too expensive.
The total cost to educate a child from Class 1 to 12 in a decent private school in India is approximately ₹20–22 lakh.
School fees have surged by over 169% in the past decade, far outpacing inflation and salary growth.
Middle-class families in urban areas spend ₹1.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh per child annually on education.
A 2025 survey reported that 81% of parents faced fee hikes of 10% or more for the academic year 2025–26.
Despite fee regulation attempts, many schools bypass rules by relabeling miscellaneous charges, leading to weak enforcement.
