Helmet Tap Ejection: MLB Umpire Misapplied Minor League Rule
In a baseball game, Taylor Walls tapped his helmet after a strike.
The umpire, Nic Lentz, ejected him because of the gesture, as a challenge to a strike call.
However, the umpire used a rule from the minor leagues and spring training games.
During those, tapping the helmet is used to challenge a call, which is not the case in the regular MLB season.
So the umpire made a mistake by interpreting the tap as a challenge, when in regular season, the gesture is sarcastic only, and therefore, did not call for an ejection.
Umpire Nic Lentz ejected Taylor Walls for tapping his helmet.
The ejection occurred during a game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Houston Astros.
Lentz applied a Minor League Baseball rule used in spring training, not regular MLB.
In the minors, tapping the helmet signals a challenge to a called strike.
In MLB, it's a sarcastic gesture, but not a challenge.
