Ahmedabad Jewelers Raise Concerns Over Gold Import Quotas
Imagine a special deal between India and UAE where jewelers can import gold at a lower tax rate.
To get this deal, jewelers need a permit called a TRQ.
However, jewelers in Ahmedabad are upset because they say the rules for getting these permits are not clear.
They feel that the way the permits are given out favors big businesses because of a high sales requirement.
Small jewelers weren't told about this rule when they applied and are now missing out.
This is causing problems because it makes it harder for small jewelers to compete and could lead to higher gold prices for them.
Ahmedabad jewelers are concerned about the allocation process for gold import quotas under the India-UAE CEPA.
They have requested the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to clarify eligibility criteria.
Jewelers oppose the Rs 25 crore turnover threshold, as it disadvantages smaller businesses.
Many applicants were unaware of the turnover rule when applying.
Over 3,000 applications were received, but only about 1,400 were approved.
