Delhi High Court Issues Notices in Multi-State Insurance Scam
Some people are pretending others are dead to get money from insurance companies.
They are using fake death certificates, and a scam has been going on in several states.
The Delhi High Court is looking into this because the Delhi government and the MCD (which handles death certificates) may not have been careful enough.
A lawyer noticed that some certificates were wrong, and now the court wants to know how the death certificates are being made.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is also investigating because they think a lot of money was stolen in this scam.
This investigation came about due to a scam that was exposed where a person who had already died was issued another certificate and used to claim money.
The Delhi High Court issued notices to MCD and Delhi government regarding lapses in death certificate issuance.
The notices were prompted by a plea citing a large-scale insurance scam across multiple states.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) registered a money laundering case related to the fraudulent insurance claims.
The scam involved fabricating policies, documentation, and allegedly orchestrating murders for payouts.
The petitioner claims that loopholes in verification processes facilitate such frauds.
