Nearly 1 in 10 vehicles skip barrier-less FASTag toll payments

Nearly 1 in 10 vehicles skip barrier-less FASTag toll payments

India is using a new kind of toll booth where cars don't have to stop and pay with cash.

Instead, every car must carry a special electronic pass called FASTag.

The toll gates automatically scan each car's pass as it drives through.

But almost one out of every ten cars that passed through five such gates used a pass that was broken, empty, or invalid.

So the owners of those cars received electronic notices telling them to pay their toll within 72 hours.

If people do not pay quickly, they are asked to pay double the toll amount.

Cars and jeeps were the vehicles that broke the rules the most.

One toll gate in Delhi sent out over four lakh such notices.

The toll gates have gotten a little better over time, but many people still do not pay.

The government wants to add these automatic gates to many more highways in the coming years to reduce traffic delays.
