Turkish Court Blocks Erdogan Rival's Presidential Bid
A Turkish court said no to a lawsuit by Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, who wanted to challenge the cancellation of his university degree.
This decision makes it harder for him to run for president in the next election, which is in 2028.
Imamoglu is in jail and has been accused of corruption and insulting a prosecutor.
He says these accusations are not true and are because of politics.
His political party and other groups think this is not fair and is being done to stop him from running against the current president, Tayyip Erdogan.
The government says the courts are independent and not being pressured.
A Turkish court rejected Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu's lawsuit challenging the cancellation of his university degree.
Imamoglu, a rival to President Tayyip Erdogan, is jailed and facing corruption and insult charges.
His political party and other groups criticize his jailing as an anti-democratic move to eliminate electoral competition.
Imamoglu denies the accusations, calling them politically motivated.
The next presidential election is scheduled for 2028, and Imamoglu's legal team plans to appeal the court's decision.
