Thoughtful Window Design Turns Home Views Into Features
Windows can do more than let sunlight into a home.
They can help decide how people use a room and what they notice first.
A window can be placed to show a tree, garden, courtyard or patch of sky.
A seat built into the wall can turn an unused corner into a cozy place.
Curtains hung near the ceiling and reaching the floor can make a window look taller.
Different rooms can have different kinds of windows.
Furniture and decorations should not block an attractive view.
Sometimes the best design choice is to leave the area around a window mostly empty.
Window impact depends on proportion, placement and the view beyond it, not size alone.
Built-in seating, deep sills and concealed storage can make window corners useful and architectural.
Ceiling-height curtains can emphasize windows, improve room proportions and create a more intimate atmosphere.
Different rooms can use different window scales, including corner glazing and narrow vertical openings.
Leaving space around a window can allow light, architecture and views to define the room.
