IIT Panel Faces Hurdles in Reviewing STPs Discharging Waste into Yamuna
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Delhi is having trouble checking if the sewage treatment plants (STPs) along the Yamuna river are working properly.
These STPs are supposed to clean the sewage before it goes into the river.
The IIT team needs important data and access to the STPs to do their job, but they haven't gotten what they need yet.
The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) runs these STPs, and some of them use different methods to clean the water.
The team from IIT says they can't give a good report without the right information.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is involved and will hear about this soon.
The goal is to make sure the river isn't polluted with harmful bacteria.
IIT Delhi is facing hurdles in reviewing the effectiveness of STPs discharging waste into the Yamuna river.
The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) operates 37 STPs, with 11 using chlorination, 14 using UV disinfection, and 12 undergoing upgradation.
IIT Delhi has not received crucial data and access to the STPs for a comprehensive evaluation.
The NGT has directed the DJB and DPCC to expedite data sharing and provide logistical support for inspections.
The expert committee has noted the importance of microbial quality data at both the inlet and outlet of UV channels for a realistic assessment.
