SC Orders Systemic Reset for 25% EWS Quota in Private Schools
The Supreme Court of India has said that the central and state governments must make sure all children from 6 to 14 years old get free education.
This is because the Constitution says it's a fundamental right.
The court also said that 25% of seats in private schools should be for children from weaker sections and disadvantaged groups.
Schools and governments have to follow certain rules to make sure this happens, like providing information in different languages and helping parents with the admission process.
The court gave guidelines to make sure no child is denied admission unfairly.
The court also wants to make sure that these children are not treated differently once they are in school and that the government pays the schools on time for these students.
The Supreme Court ruled that the Centre and states must ensure free and compulsory education for children aged 6 to 14.
The court ordered the implementation of a 25% reservation for children from economically weaker sections (EWS) and socially disadvantaged groups in private, unaided, non-minority schools.
The court directed the establishment of a transparent, centralised online admission portal in every state to minimise human interference and ensure a merit-based selection process.
The court emphasised the need for monitoring mechanisms to ensure that EWS students are not marginalised or discriminated against within the school environment.
The court directed that the newly framed rules must include a fixed timeline for the release of funds by the government to ensure timely reimbursement of costs to private schools.
