SEBI Indefinitely Postpones T+0 Settlement Roll-out Due to Low Demand
Imagine buying stocks is like buying a toy.
Normally, you pay for the toy today, and you get it the next day (that's called T+1 settlement).
SEBI, which is like the rule-maker for the stock market, wanted to try a faster way where you get the toy the very same day you pay for it (T+0 settlement).
They tested this with 25 different stocks, but not many people were interested in using this super-fast method.
Big stock trading companies also said it would be too complicated to run both the old way and the new way at the same time and that it might make it harder for everyone to trade.
So, SEBI has decided to put the same-day settlement plan on hold for now.
They will think about it again later when more people want it and it's easier for everyone to handle.
SEBI has indefinitely postponed the planned expansion of the T+0 (same-day) stock settlement cycle.
The decision follows negligible investor interest and very low trading volumes observed during the T+0 pilot phase involving 25 stocks.
Concerns were raised that operating both T+0 and T+1 settlement cycles concurrently could fragment market liquidity.
Qualified Stock Brokers (QSBs) cited operational complexities and a lack of a clear business case, requesting the framework be optional.
SEBI cited the need for more time for 'smooth implementation' and will reconsider the plan when market readiness and demand increase.
