India’s Industry Credit Growth Surges 20%, Gold Loans Moderate

Banks in India lent much more money to industries in July than they did a year earlier.

Loans to industry grew by 20 percent.

Engineering, jewellery, petroleum products, and vehicle businesses were among the biggest borrowers.

Loans backed by gold jewellery were still growing, but their growth slowed a lot.

Loans to service businesses also increased quickly.

Retail loans, such as housing and vehicle loans, grew as well.

Infrastructure loans grew more slowly, and lending to roads and telecommunications fell.

Overall bank lending increased by 19.3 percent.
