India's Nuclear Power Expansion Gains Momentum
India is planning to greatly increase its nuclear power capacity.
Currently, it has 8.78 GW of nuclear power, but it aims to reach 22 GW by FY32 and 100 GW by 2047.
The government has introduced the SHANTI Act, 2025, to support this mission and allow private companies to participate.
The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is developing three new types of small modular reactors (SMRs) to help achieve these goals.
These reactors will be built in different places across India, including Tarapur and Visakhapatnam.
The government and public sector will handle a big part of this expansion, but private companies will also play a role.
India's nuclear power capacity is projected to increase from 8.78 GW to 22 GW by FY32.
The Nuclear Energy Mission aims for 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
The SHANTI Act, 2025, supports the mission and opens the sector to private participation.
BARC is developing three indigenous SMRs: BSMR-200, SMR-55, and HTGCR for hydrogen production.
Tarapur and Visakhapatnam are approved sites for the new SMRs.
