Residents Protest Land Acquisition for Jathia Devi Township
People from eight villages near Shimla are very upset because the government wants to take their land to build a new town.
This new town, called Jathia Devi, is supposed to help make Shimla less crowded by moving some government offices and buildings there.
The people are worried because the land includes their homes and the fields where they grow food.
They said they won't let the government take their land and told the officials about their concerns during a meeting.
The government says they will follow the rules and listen to the people's objections before taking any land.
Residents of eight villages in Shimla district and one in Solan district protested the government's plan to acquire land for the Jathia Devi satellite township.
The protest was against the acquisition of residential and agricultural land, which is part of the Draft Social Impact Assessment (SIA) report.
The township project aims to decongest Shimla by relocating government offices and developing planned housing under a PPP model.
Around 300 residents, including women, attended the public hearing to submit their objections to the land acquisition.
The government assured that land can only be acquired after following due process and with the consent of the landowners.
