Trump administration promises $3 billion for critical minerals and batteries

The President of the United States wants America to make more of the special rocks and metals used to build things like cars, phones, and weapons.

These special materials are called critical minerals.

On Friday, he told a big group of mining experts that the government will spend about $3 billion to help companies find and process these minerals in the United States.

The government is giving loans to companies like Sila Nanotechnologies, which makes parts for batteries, and Sunrise Energy Metals, which mines a metal called scandium.

The United States needs these minerals because it used up many missiles and other weapons during a war with Iran that lasted five months.

Making more minerals at home also means the United States does not have to buy so many from China.

The government will give $100 million to mining schools so more students can learn how to be mining engineers.

Their goal is to double the number of mining graduates within two years.

The President said the United States is becoming the minerals superpower of the world.
