COP30 Ends Without Major Climate Progress
The COP30 meeting about climate change ended without making big changes.
Even though the planet is getting warmer and climate disasters are causing more damage, countries keep meeting every year because it's the only place where everyone can talk.
Some countries, especially smaller and poorer ones, don't have much power to leave or create new groups.
The richest countries can keep doing things that hurt others.
The meeting did agree on some small things, like giving more money for adaptation and recognizing the rights of indigenous people.
But the big problem is that every country has to agree, so no one is really responsible if things don't get better.
Some people think a big country should take action alone to fix the problem.
COP30 concluded without substantive progress on climate action.
The planet is warmer, agricultural yields are lower, and economic losses from climate disasters are higher since the first COP in 1995.
Small island states and least developed countries have minimal power to walk away or create alternative institutions.
COP30 achieved the tripling of adaptation finance by 2035, recognition of indigenous land rights, and operationalisation of the Loss and Damage fund.
The consensus rule in the UNFCCC allows any petro-state to veto meaningful action, creating a structural dysfunction.
