Airtel Cautious on AGR Dues as Vodafone Idea Challenges Government
Imagine telecom companies like Airtel and Vodafone Idea owe money to the government.
This money is called AGR dues.
The government says the companies owe a lot, but the companies disagree.
Vodafone Idea is going to court to fight this.
Airtel is being cautious because it doesn't want to fight the government.
The court will decide how much money the companies really owe based on the definition of AGR.
If Airtel does end up owing money, it will be taking the same payment schedule as other telcos.
Bharti Airtel is unlikely to challenge the government's fresh demand of ₹9,450 crore in AGR dues.
Vodafone Idea has moved the Supreme Court to challenge its own AGR dues.
The Supreme Court previously rejected appeals by telecom operators regarding AGR.
Airtel's deferred payment liability towards AGR was at ₹38,604 crore as of March end.
Airtel increased AGR provisions by ₹7,516 crore in FY25.
