Two Grieving Mothers Win BJP Seats in Bengal
Ratna Debnath and Hasirani Rath have both won elections in West Bengal.
Debnath is the mother of a doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in 2024.
Rath is the mother of Chandranath Rath, who was shot dead in 2026.
Both women ran for the BJP.
Debnath won the Panihati seat, and Rath won the Nandigram by-election.
Their family tragedies had become matters of public attention.
Their victories give them a chance to speak and take part in decisions in the state Assembly.
The results do not show that voters chose them for only one reason.
Ratna Debnath won the Panihati Assembly seat on a BJP ticket, receiving 87,977 votes.
Debnath defeated TMC candidate Tirthankar Ghosh by 28,836 votes.
Hasirani Rath won the Nandigram by-election with 1,64,427 votes, defeating Congress candidate Milan Pradhan.
Rath's victory margin was 1,22,753 votes, described in the article as a constituency record.
Both women entered electoral politics after high-profile family tragedies; the article cautions that election results do not establish a single reason for their victories.
