Trump Softens Drug Price Demands in New Push
President Trump is asking 17 big drug companies to lower their prices, but his demands have become less strict.
He wants these companies to match the prices other rich countries pay for certain medicines, but only for some of the drugs and only for low-income people.
His previous plan was more wide-ranging.
Drug company stocks fell after the announcement, while the pharmaceutical lobby group is against the effort, saying it could hurt American innovation and leadership in the field.
Trump sent letters to 17 pharmaceutical companies demanding lower drug prices.
He wants companies to lower prices for drugs on the market to 'most-favored-nation' rates for Medicaid.
For other payers, the rates should apply only to newly launched medicines.
The S&P 500 Pharmaceuticals index dropped 2.7% in response.
PhRMA criticized the effort, saying it would undermine American leadership.
