South India Leads in Term Insurance Rider Purchases, Study Reveals
Imagine you're buying a basic plan for emergencies, like a simple umbrella.
This is like a basic term insurance.
Now, sometimes you can add extra features to that umbrella, like extra strong fabric or a special handle, for a little more money.
These are called 'riders' for insurance.
A new study shows that people in the southern part of India are buying these extra features (riders) much more often than people in the north.
For example, they're adding protection for accidents or serious sicknesses.
People in the north are not buying as many of these extra protections.
The study also found that men and women tend to choose different types of riders based on what worries them most.
Hyderabad and Bengaluru are cities where people are really keen on these add-ons.
Southern regions of India are leading in the purchase of riders with term insurance plans, outpacing the North.
Riders, optional add-ons to insurance policies, offer benefits like critical illness coverage, accidental death, and waiver of premiums.
45-47% of term plan buyers in Southern metros and Tier 2 markets opted for riders, while only 21-23% did so in the North.
Men preferred Accidental Death Benefit riders, while women favored Critical Illness riders, especially those with cancer screening features.
Buyers purchasing less than Rs 2 crore cover prioritized Accidental Death Benefit riders, while higher cover amounts saw a shift towards Critical Illness riders.
