Congo Ebola Outbreak Shows Progress, But Peak Remains Unclear
Ebola is still spreading in parts of eastern Congo.
Health workers have seen fewer new cases in some places.
Congo’s health minister said this may mean the response is helping.
However, United Nations and World Health Organization officials said it is too soon to say the outbreak has peaked.
Some areas of Ituri are now under control.
Cases are still rising quickly in North Kivu, especially around Butembo.
The outbreak has caused thousands of confirmed illnesses and deaths.
Officials say it may take many months and continued support to bring it under control.
U.N. officials said Ebola-control efforts in eastern Congo are showing progress but warned the epidemic remains massive.
The World Health Organization said it was too early to confirm that the outbreak had passed its peak.
Congo’s health minister said daily cases had fallen from about 120 at the mid-August peak to around 80.
Government figures reported 7,258 confirmed cases and 3,510 deaths across seven provinces.
North Kivu remains alarming, with 1,269 confirmed cases, including 555 reported during the 21 days before September 12.
