Japan Debates Princess Aiko's Royal Succession
Princess Aiko is a very popular princess in Japan.
Many people think she should be able to become the next emperor, but the rules say only men can.
There is a big discussion about changing these rules.
Some people want to keep the old rules, while others want to make it fair for women.
The United Nations has even said Japan's rules are not fair.
Right now, the only male heir is Princess Aiko's cousin, Prince Hisahito.
If the rules don't change, there might not be anyone left to be emperor after him.
Princess Aiko, the only child of Emperor Naruhito, is at the center of a debate about Japan's male-only royal succession laws.
Aiko's popularity has reignited discussions about changing the succession rules to allow women to inherit the throne.
The current laws, established in 1947, bar Aiko from taking on a more prominent royal role or becoming the next emperor.
Prince Hisahito of Akishino, Aiko's first cousin, is the only male heir and is likely to become emperor, but there is no one after him unless the rules change.
The United Nations' Human Rights Committee criticized Japan's male-only succession rules, prompting the Japanese government to withhold funds for the commission.
