India Introduces Standard Hospital Bill Format
India has introduced a new standard format for hospital bills to make them clearer and more transparent.
This format is meant to help patients understand exactly what they are being charged for, like room rent, doctor's fees, and medicines.
The bills will need to show a detailed breakdown of all charges.
Right now, hospitals can choose to follow this format, but it might become mandatory in the future.
A recent survey found that many people did not get detailed bills, which caused confusion.
The new format aims to reduce such issues and make billing more consistent across all healthcare places in India.
India's Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) introduced a uniform but voluntary hospital bill format to enhance transparency in healthcare costs.
The new standard, IS-19493:2025, applies to all healthcare institutions and requires itemized breakdowns of charges such as room rent, doctors’ fees, medicines, and diagnostics.
The format aims to address widespread concerns about inconsistent and unclear billing practices, which have led to confusion and disputes.
A nationwide survey in April 2024 found that only 47% of respondents received itemized bills, while 10% had 'package charges' without details.
The standard format will require hospitals to provide package details and show the total amount, discounts, advance payments, payment modes, and receipt numbers.
