Supreme Court Upholds Mumbai Law College Seat Cuts

Supreme Court Upholds Mumbai Law College Seat Cuts

The Supreme Court allowed Mumbai law colleges to keep their reduced seat numbers.

Mumbai University had cut the number of seats by half at about 45 colleges.

The cuts apply to three-year and five-year law courses for 2026-27.

The university said some colleges did not have enough qualified teachers.

A group called the Lawyers’ Foundation challenged the decision.

The Bombay High Court rejected that challenge, and the Supreme Court did not change that result.

Some colleges can keep their original number of seats if they hire the required staff on time.

Students say changing seat numbers during admissions makes choosing a college difficult.
