Supreme Court Acts on Uttarakhand Forest Land Encroachments
The Supreme Court of India started a case on its own because the government of Uttarakhand was not doing enough to stop people from illegally taking forest land.
The court was very upset that the state was not acting to protect the forests.
They told the state to form a team to check how much land has been taken and to report back.
The court also said that no one can build anything on this land until the team finishes its work.
Recently, the state did remove some illegal buildings in a forest area called Corbett Tiger Reserve, freeing up 25 hectares of land.
Some people tried to stop this action, but the police handled it peacefully.
The court also found out that over 2,000 acres of forest land were illegally occupied by private individuals.
The Supreme Court initiated a suo motu case against the Uttarakhand government for inaction on forest land encroachments.
The court directed the formation of an inquiry committee to assess the extent of encroachments and submit a report.
Private parties were restrained from creating third-party rights over the forest land, and construction was prohibited pending the inquiry.
The forest department was ordered to take possession of vacant forest land, excluding residential houses.
An anti-encroachment drive at the Corbett Tiger Reserve freed 25 hectares of illegally occupied land, with notices issued to 52 encroachers.
