Corporate India Reshapes Boardrooms Through Faster Leadership Renewal
Companies in India are changing their top leaders more quickly than before.
A report studied thousands of senior-leader changes across many industries.
Many of the changes involved independent directors who help oversee companies.
Companies also changed CEOs, chairpersons and other directors.
More businesses are promoting people from inside the company instead of hiring from outside.
For new CEO jobs, people who had worked as chief operating officers were the most common choice.
Some companies are also hiring leaders from different industries when they need skills such as technology or digital expertise.
Leaders from multinational companies are increasingly moving to Indian-origin businesses.
A report tracked 4,361 CXO and senior-leadership movements between April 2025 and March 2026, describing corporate leadership change as 91% faster.
Non-Executive and Independent Directors represented 40% of board-level movements, followed by MDs, CEOs and CMDs at 24%.
The report recorded 431 CEO movements, with Consumer and E-commerce, BFSI, and Media and Entertainment accounting for the largest shares.
External hiring fell from 81% to 65%, while internal leadership movements rose from 12% to 30% between FY2024-25 and FY2025-26.
Among first-time CEO appointments, COOs supplied 53% of candidates, while 59% of executives moving from multinational companies joined Indian-origin companies.
