India to Start Leopard Sterilisation in Maharashtra
India is going to start a special program to control the number of leopards in Maharashtra.
The government wants to stop leopards from having babies so that there are fewer leopards in areas where they often meet people.
This will help keep people safe.
They will catch five female leopards first and give them a special treatment that will stop them from reproducing.
The treatment is not harmful to the leopards.
The government is also using computers to help warn people when leopards are nearby.
This is the first time such a program is being tried in India.
Maharashtra to launch India's first leopard sterilisation trial to manage population and reduce human-leopard encounters.
The trial will initially focus on five female leopards in the Junnar forest division.
Leopards will undergo an immunocontraceptive procedure at the Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre in Pune.
The government plans to eventually sterilise 125 female leopards to control the population.
Fourteen farmers have died in leopard attacks in the last two months, prompting the use of AI to alert villagers about leopard movements.
