Panel Seeks Study on LPG Consumption Growth Among Ujjwala Beneficiaries
A group in the Indian government wants to study why people who get free cooking gas connections under a special program called PMUY are using more gas.
They noticed that the number of gas cylinders used by these people has gone up in the last few years.
The government has been giving subsidies to make gas cheaper for these people.
The group also wants the government to encourage the use of smaller gas cylinders.
The PMUY program started in 2016 and has given out millions of free gas connections to poor households.
The government has also increased the amount of money they give to help these people buy gas.
The parliamentary standing committee on petroleum and natural gas has recommended a study to understand the reasons behind the increased LPG consumption among PMUY beneficiaries.
Per capita LPG consumption among PMUY beneficiaries has risen from 3.68 cylinders in FY21-22 to 4.47 cylinders in FY24-25.
The government has increased subsidies for LPG cylinders for PMUY beneficiaries, from ₹200 to ₹300 per 14.2 kg cylinder.
The committee has urged the government to encourage the use of 5 kg and 10 kg LPG cylinders among PMUY beneficiaries.
The PMUY scheme has achieved its targets of providing additional connections under Ujjwala 2.0 and has approved 75 lakh more connections for FY24 to FY26.
