Infosys Sets 2025 Buyback Record Date, Tax Rules Clarified
Infosys is planning to buy back some of its own shares in 2025.
A special date, called the record date, will be set to decide who gets to sell their shares back to the company.
If you own shares on this date, you can choose to sell them back.
The company has to pay a special tax on the money it uses for the buyback, which means the money you get for selling your shares back will not be taxed by you.
However, if you sell your shares on the stock market before this special date, different tax rules might apply depending on how long you've owned them.
Infosys does this to give extra money back to its owners and make its profits look better per share.
Infosys announced its 2025 share buyback program.
The record date will determine which shareholders are eligible to tender shares.
Under Section 115QA, Infosys will pay a 20% tax on distributed income, making buyback proceeds tax-free for shareholders.
Shareholders selling before the record date on the stock exchange face capital gains tax: 10% for long-term gains over ₹1 lakh, and 15% for short-term gains.
Investors should monitor official notifications for the record date, offer price, and schedule to make informed decisions.
